P O R T for chamber orchestra + electronics.
Stillness of giants,
first rays cast over the water;
potential for movement, trapped in time.
PORT is a meditation on my walks in the industrial port of Rotterdam: in the early morning and late evening, the immense machinery stands unmoving, there is a strange stillness, potential and grandeur in these moments.
The generative material for this piece comes from the beating between the 21st and 22nd partials of a low C. A special tuning is used for pitch classes throughout the electronics, based on the overtone series:
hence, the interval between a written F and F# is 21:22. This special interval opens the musical space in the piece and is a rotational point-of-reference throughout.
